I agree with others, this lid design is too fragile if the mug falls. The inner plastic breaks loose from the outer, and it then leaks horribly.

The lid of this travel mug is hard to clean. It needs to be redesigned for easier cleaning.

The mug is great, the lid is innovative. Where else will you find a travel mug that works this well and you can hold upside down? As to those of you that have issues with gunk build up, try putting the lid in the dishwasher. Top shelf works fine, and no gunk.

I have owned the mug for less than a month, I love the fact that it keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold. The lid is a piece of junk, typical Chinese crap. The lid broke from tipping over .I won't be buying another and won't recommend this product to anyone.

This easy-clean thing is not quite as good as it sounds. Yes the internals come out pretty far so you can get a brush or sponge deep in there. Unfortunately both mine and my wife's lid have started building up some sort of grey gunk inside the the lid (in the spring especially) and on the threads on the outside of the lid. I assume it's a nice combo of congealed cream and whatnot, but it's gross and looks terribly unhealthy.

If there were a way to remove the internals to clean them periodically that would be nice.

I'm on my third lid for my 24oz mug. The original one was the old style, the two replacements are this newer Easy-Clean style. I use my mug in my home office and pour the liquid into a double-walled glass cup. Within 20 seconds of pouring it in, the lid starts hissing in bits and spurts and is incredibly annoying. New lids have not fixed the problem. I think I have to give up on this mug and go back to my Stanley - it keeps the beverage hotter for longer, doesn't leak and doesn't hiss.

Dropped mine from the foot of my bed to the floor, about 3 feet. Dent the bottom. picked it up and the lid was leaking. I guess the shock from the drop fractured the lid somehow even though it hit on the bottom. The Grey soft material and the harder black material is separating and I cant get it to seal without leaking. This is the 2nd replacement and I wont be buying this brand anymore. Looks cool but isn't rugged by any means. I only used mine for ice water since it took me weeks to get the old coffee smell out of my lid after only a week of use for coffee.

I have used these travel mugs for years. The first lid design was very robust and leak proof! Since they have changed the lid 3 times now, each time the lids are more and more fragile! Granted the first lids were troublesome to clean but you could drop the mug out of a third story window and not have to worry. Now if the mug falls over the plastic breaks!! Maybe this is just a new ploy to buy more replacement lids? They should be able to come up with a design that is easier to clean yet durable. The mugs do keep your beverage hot or cold for very long periods of time, a reason why I like this product but for the price I think I will look elsewhere for a more durable mug!

The New lid design leaks from the lock and releases steam when unlocked.
The older design allowed the steam to escape from the mouth piece and never leaked.this New design is flawed and potentially dangerous.

I love all of the Contigo mugs but this is the lid for the 24oz mug and if you're using ice, the tiny pieces get stuck in the mouthpiece and break the seal! I'm SO disappointed and embarrassed because one time mine leaked on my seat on a train!! Everybody had a laugh with that!

I can't thank Contigo enough for making this genius lid easy to clean. It's such a smart mechanism! The lid seals great and we've never had any issues even when we've knocked over our travel mug. It's always contained the contents perfectly. Please make more colors red, white, silver/grey…..We'd like to replace our other Contigo travel mug lids!

I don't have a review but a hint to clean the old type lid. Just get some amonia mix it with hot water 1/3 amonia and 2/3 hot water and then seal it and turn it upside down next day all clean.

    By Kristen

I love the new design of the lids so they can be cleaned easier. But, there is something about the opening to drink from that's different than the old one. It sprays out the spout every time I take a sip, like the shape is different or something. I end up with coffee splatters on the front of my shirt all the time now!!! I don't know why the shape of the mouth piece changed but it definitely did and it's definitely bad!!

I love my contigo mug but the lids, like another reviewer commented, get that moldy stuff inside and it is eventually impossible to clean. I do not understand why I should have to pay $7 for a replacement lid when I should be able to clean my mug so the buildup will not cause the moldy stuff to form.

Just came to the site to get another one of these lids. I purchased a mug last year with this lid and have used it problems I really like the full flip out design, and have had zero problems. Now I want the same lid for my older mugs.

    By Watsonne

I had this cup for less than three days and the plastic broke, so now it won't seal at all. Very frustrating, considering how much I paid for the travel mug. I'll be looking at other brands to replace it.

I'm about to buy this lid. Granted I dropped my mug a few times on various types of ground (i.e. industrial carpeted hardwood, hardwood, cement), but the issue wasn't obvious until the mug was leaking just by taking a drink.

The part that has the screw is glued onto the rest of the lid, which can obviously come apart over time. Maybe it's easier for them to manufacture, but I think it's a design flaw that allows the lid to become non-functional.

On the plus side, this new version of the lid with the "easy clean" flip is a major improvement for cleaning over the first version.

I think it's ridiculous that you have to buy a replacement lid to prevent yourself from ingesting mold like build up in the previous edition. I clean mine vigorously daily and get chunks of sludge coming out because of unreachable cleaning compartments. So sure make the customer pay $7 bucks for a new lid to prevent them from swallowing mold. NOT Happy

    By Ellen

I'd pay more money for the old lid. This is just dissappointing after the previous lid! I'm clumsy I need, basically, an adult sippy cup! Not this knock off version. BOOOO.

I have 3 Contigo AutoSeal Mugs of my original lids stopped functioning and via the warranty I received the replacement which is the Easy-Clean Lid ....well I had the mug in my bag ....I put it on a desk and it toppled over and I could NOT believe how the lid shattered ALL the years that I've had my mugs I can't begin to tell you how many times I accidentally dropped them and NEVER had the lid(s) broke....I am hoping you will revisit the materials you are now using ....that LID should not of broken much for the warranty as I will have to buy one....I don't intend to give up on Contigo but clearly you need to provide a lid equal to what you previously produced. Else wise, reluctantly I may have to start using another mug I have that is a close second to Contigo.

I have had these mugs for a number of years and occasionally replaced the lids just to get a nice clean one. The newer lids are much more fragile. Previous drops to the carpeted floor meant no spill, today fill from the table to the floor and separated spilling coffee everywhere. Ordering one more lid but ready to move on to other vendor.

    By Derek

Have had the same Contigo mug for over 6 years, I just kept replacing the lid. I was excited to see the easy clean lid design since I kept having gross lids. But this lid doesn't keep my coffee hot for more than an hour, it used to be close to 3 or 4.

Over the years I've had many travel mugs plastic and metal. I've always thought of at least 1 thing that could improve each one. But now with the AUTOSEAL® West Loop Easy-Clean Lid I haven't thought of a single one for this one. "yet"
I've had it for just a week and I love his mug.
    Very satisfied.

I dropped this mug ONCE, about a 3 foot fall onto a hard floor, and the lid split open. It is completely unusable. The warranty will not cover drops or other normal wear and tear, which makes me question why Contigo has a lifetime warranty at all. I do not recommend buying a mug with this lid. If you do choose to buy Contigo, I would try one of their flatter lids. I have a second mug with this lid design. Because it is smaller, it has less to break... but I haven't dropped it yet, so who knows?

Purchased Contigo Auto Seal Travel Mug Sunday. Monday son takes to school and bam, fell over and the lid broke. Spent too much money for one use bottle.

I have been a Contigo convert from day one, over 4-5 years ago. I drink ice water all day every day. I fill the Contigo up with ice in the morning and just refill the water. It is awesome. As I have been an avid user, I have seen all of the iterations of lids. Some better than others. My last lids had taken a beating from being dropped and what not, so I got Contigo replacement lids as stocking stuffers. I was thrilled! They even had the locking mechanism on the top of the lid. I have never had a need for such a thing, but thought it was cool....until I started using it.

The first day I used it, everything seemed fine. Then, an ice piece flew out of the top of my lid. I thought it was odd but didn't think too much of it. The next day, the same thing. Shortly after taking a sip of ice water and setting it down....another ice chip flew out the top. I have never had this issue in all of my years. The next day I was driving to work and I laid my contigo on the seat of the car as it is too big for my cup holders....and a few minutes later I looked over and saw a puddle of water on my passenger seat. I was shocked! I have never had a Contigo leak (even without the lock button). When I picked the Contigo up to look at it, a small piece of ice popped out of the top. Now, I'm seeing a pattern. I don't know if it is the way that the new mechanism is set up inside of the mug, but it doesn't work well with crushed ice or ice cubes that melt too small. I have since had my mug leak on my seat 2 more times :( Luckily it is water and doesn't stain....but it is a hassle. I can no longer trust that my mug is leak proof.

I went to look for another lid option and they don't sell any other lids at this time. I'm heart broken. This cup goes every where with has even traveled the world with me. My family even teases me that it is my "binkie". Hoping that they continue to revise the lids so I can keep using my favorite cup.

So I just knocked my Contigo Autoseal West Loop $20 plus travel mug off my table at work. Literally a 2.5 foot fall and the lid broke. Called Contigo for help and they said it's not covered because they, "started using a cheaper plastic and are aware they will break easier than the old design". Nice... How is this a travel mug? The new design would leak anyway when you hit the button to take a drink shortly after filling it and spew hot coffee out of the vent. Guess I'll look elsewhere, it's a bummer, these used to be awesome!

I'm a contigo fan, so much so that I push others to buy this brand. I've had mostly good experiences with all my travel mugs and products. That being said I've bought replacment lids for some older mugs because after awhile, you just cannot get them clean enough. The oldest design I've had had the spring mechanism hidden under plastic. No way to really clean it well. Then, the next iteration I purchased had what I will call the "2nd generation" lid, where you can flip open the inner plastic piece to access the spring and components. Much improved and with the brush set, much cleaner. Finally, "3rd gen" easy clean lid where the whole mechanism flips out, including the silicone sealing part that closes the spout! FANTASTIC! I'm a bit O.C.D. I suppose but I want to really clean the lids well. This seems to be the best solution so far, and I look forward to seeing how durable the design is. Frankly, I will be buying a few of this new design to upgrade my old mugs. They have taken a beating....many drops, bumps and clean ups. All holding up well. I do recommend buying the brush set. The smallest brush worked well to clean the spout on the gen 2 lids but overall they help the process. In a pinch a baby bottle brush works wonders too!

Thank you Contigo! As a suggestion, could you please put together a "bundle" option for those of us looking to replace and upgrade our mugs to the new lid design? Perhaps a three pack with reduced pricing, or free shipping promotions? It would help to keep this loyal customer loyal :)

Don't get me wrong, I loved my Contigo travel mugs from the first time I used them. But the original lid was very hard to clean, and if not kept clean developed an odor. NO MORE problems with these lids. I just wish there was a 24oz model!!!!

breaks very easily as previous reviewer mentioned. Go with Thermos instead

1st week of taking this mug to school, and the lid shattered when mug tipped off desk and on to the floor. Will cost me as much as whole new mug to replace lid! How ridiculous

    By KP

Had the older style lid and it stopped being spill proof. Got this as a replacement lid an it's awesome - so much easier to clean and does not leak. Would recommend any mug with this new lid design!

    By Fuzzy

Great, about time. And to be able to replace all of the lids that I have is marvelous. THANK YOU.

I love my west loop Contigo mugs (I have two 16 oz and two 20 oz) and I fill a couple of them everyday with my Green Mountain French Vanilla from my Keurig. No more coffee spill messes, just in my mouth and down the hatch. Fortunately, I have a patient and loving wife who deals with keeping the lids clean for me. I keep her supplied little bushes and after soaking and cleaning, she has my lids clean and ready to use. Heaven forbid that I would have to content with this terrible task! Then Contigo introduced the Easy-Clean Lid, wonderful; she is happy and I am ecstatic. Five-Stars

    By ER

Ooh, the new design on the lid is awesome. Inside there's a latch that you flip up and it allows you to have greater access to clean the inside components. Most importantly, the lock feature REALLY helps prevent accidental leakages if you carry your mug in a bag or something (which I do). This is a great product design/improvement!
